ABSTRACT

The research conducted an investigation into the impact of computer literacy on the administrative performance of non-academic staff at the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The study aimed to assess the level of computer literacy among non-academic staff, determine the influence of computer literacy on their administrative performance, examine their perception of computer usage for file storage, and identify challenges they face in using computers. Four research questions were posed and addressed in this study. The sample included all fifty-three (53) non-academic staff members in the Faculty of Education at the University of Benin. The data collected from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations. The findings suggest that non-academic staff possess proficient computer skills, underscoring the importance of basic computer competency. Computer literacy significantly affects their administrative performance, highlighting the transformative impact of technology on their traditional roles. The study also reveals a positive attitude among non-academic staff toward computer usage, emphasizing the need for their involvement in decision-making and support for technology integration. However, challenges such as inadequate skills, power supply issues, maintenance costs, training needs, and storage problems were identified, necessitating comprehensive strategies to address these limitations. Institutions are recommended to invest in and expand computer literacy training programs, focusing on advanced skills and specific software applications to enhance the efficiency of non-academic staff in their administrative roles. Encouraging and supporting the integration of technology in administrative processes, including the development of customized software tools, can significantly enhance their effectiveness. Additionally, institutions should foster an environment that celebrates and rewards the use of technology for administrative purposes, offering recognition and incentives to motivate non-academic staff to embrace technology in their work. To ensure sustained success, institutions should provide ongoing support and resources, including regular computer maintenance, access to a reliable power supply, and continuous training to keep their computer skills up to date. Implementing robust antivirus and data backup systems can further safeguard against potential data loss caused by viruses.
