ABSTRACT
The study assessed the assessment on the availability and utilization of instructional materials for the effective teaching and learning of English language among senior secondary school students in Benin Metropolis. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the Study. The population of this study consisted of all Senior Secondary School three (SS 3) Students in Benin Metropolis. Benin Metropolis is made up of four (4) Local Government Areas: Egor, Oredo, Ikpoba Okha and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas. Four research questions were raised; How effective are the instructional materials to secondary school students? Are there availability of adequate and appropriate instructional materials in secondary school in Benin metropolis? Do the English language teachers make use of the available instructional materials in teaching the learners? Is lack of availability and use of instructional materials by teachers one of the causes of poor performance by students in secondary schools? The findings in the study revealed that; when teachers design their own instructional materials, such as lesson plans, worksheets, and assessments, they are more likely to be used effectively in the classroom (92%). Most teachers (70%) reported a need for professional development and training on how to effectively utilize instructional materials in their teaching practices. The study recommends that; There should be regular training and support for teachers on the use of instructional materials. There should be ongoing assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of instructional materials.
