ABSTRACT

Workplace Hazard is a major concern worldwide, especially in developing countries where 2.78 million deaths from work-related accidents or diseases, and 374 million also from non-fatal workrelated accidents have been reported. This study assessed the awareness, knowledge and attitude of automobile repair workers to workplace hazard and safety in the Southern Senatorial District of Edo state. 15 automobile repair workshop each from the seven local government (Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba Okha, Uhunmwonde, Orhiomwon, Ovia North East and Ovia South West) were visited. A well-structured questionnaire was used in the course of this study. The questionnaire sought information on possible hazards, health problems associated with work, use of personal protective equipment and how these workers cope with their workplace. The findings of the study indicated that a high proportion of workers had adequate knowledge of the hazards in their workplace (80%) and displayed positive attitude towards safety measures. However, only 30.5% (welders), 28% (mechanics) and 26.7% (spray painter) were found to use personal protective equipment. The study also revealed that majority of the respondent indicated they had experienced workplace body injury, with 44.8% reporting to have been exposed to Oxyacetylene fumes, 22.2% to have been exposed to Battery acid and 18.7% were exposed to spray painting fumes. Although respondents had good knowledge of the hazards in their workplace and positive attitude towards safety measures, they displayed poor compliance towards safety rules and practices. Hence, routine health education on occupation-related hazards and safety should be put in place for the automobile repair workers.
