ABSTRACT
The study of the assessment of wildlife conservation by selected secondary school students in Oredo local government area was carried out to investigate the level of awareness, knowledge, attitude and practice of wildlife conservation by the students. A total number of fifteen (15) public secondary schools were identified and 40% sampling intensity was used to randomly select six (6) secondary schools. Fifty (50) copies of questionnaires were administered randomly to SS 1 to SS 3 students in each of the schools. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages. The results revealed 76.33% of the respondents are aware about Wildlife Conservation, 19% are very aware and 4.67% are not aware. Majority of the respondents (65.33%) got their information about Wildlife Conservation from schools while the least (7%) got from the internet. The results also revealed that majority of the respondents (75.67%) affirmed that no programmes set up to encourage wildlife conservation while 24.33% of the respondents were of the contrary that government/school do encourage wildlife conservation. A high proportion of the respondents (76%) do not wish to study wildlife management in higher institution while 24% want to study wildlife management as a career. The results also revealed that 56.67% of the respondents do not consider wildlife conservation as beneficial while 43.33% consider it as beneficial. The challenges towards effective wildlife conservation revealed that lack of finance (41.67%) had the highest value while poor social amenities (2.33%) had the least value. It was recommended that wildlife conservation study to be included into the secondary school curriculum, and government and other relevant stakeholders should establish wildlife conservation programs in secondary schools to orient the students on the importance of conserving wild animals.
