ASSESSMENT OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON SELECTED HIGHWAYS

ABSTRACT

In this study, vehicular classifications of vehicles that make use of the roads will be performed to know the major vehicles that define the study. Also, traffic counts would be performed on Benin – Auchi road; Benin – Effurun road; Benin – Agbor road and Benin – Ore - Sagamu expressways, as these are the major roads to be studied around Benin city. This would be achieved by performing a manual hourly count on the facilities for a period of seven days each and then calculating the space mean speed of the vehicles along the road sections. The flow speed and the density of traffic on these road sections were computed from the data gotten and regression analysis was performed to determine the coefficients of correlation, goodness of fit and the equation of line of best fit of the Greensheild’s model. The results gotten showed that the major traffic classes that make use of the roads are passenger cars, light goods vehicles, 2 axles trucks and 3 or more axles trucks, according to Federal Ministry of Works and Housing Manual. For Benin – Ore – Sagamu expressway, Benin – Auchi road, Benin – Agbor and Benin – Effurun roads, the coefficient of correlation between the speed and the flow density are – 0.8904, −0.9341, −0.9357 and −0.9624. These indicate that there is a high degree of correlation between the flow speed and density. Also, the respective goodness of fit were 0.7928, 0.8725, 0.8756 and 0.9263, these implies that the range of values that the density can be used to \define the speed of flow is within the range of 79.28% to 92.63%. The free flow speed and the jam density were 69km/hr and 1880veh/km for Benin – Ore – Sagamu expressway, 109.55km/hr and 1331veh/km for Benin Auchi road, 94.7km/hr and 1928veh/km for Benin – Agbor road; and 150.69km/hr and 1819veh/km for Benin – Effurun road. The findings showed that the use of the Greenshields model can be applied in the management of traffic on major highways in the State.
