ASSESSMENT OF THE STRATEGIES FOR WIDENING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN LIFELONG SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

ABSTRACT

This study assessed strategies for widening women participation in skill development programmes in Ikpoba-okha local government area of Edo State..  Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. A total of Ninety (90) participants selected from the Five (3) skill development Centre in Ikoba-Okha local government area where used for the study. This was selected through proportionate sampling techniques.  The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages. Findings of the study revealed that the functional skills development programmes available for women in the area are; hair dressing, catering, tailoring and fashion and design. It was also revealed that skill acquisition programmes help women to be financially independent, raise their economic status, enhance their social status and help women to be employer of labour. It also recommended that more awareness should be created by way of publicity in the various media outlets, using jingles and other forms of advertisement so that more women can be aware and participate in such programmes. It was further recommended that the scope of available in women education programmes should be broadened to accommodate a variety that can cater for the need and interest of would-be participants. These factors have the power to sustain participation in any individual.
