ABSTRACT
This study assesses the role of government in adult literacy programmes delivery in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study A total of One Hundred and Fifty (150) adults learners selected from the Six (6) adult education centres in Oredo local government area where used for the study. This was selected through purposive sampling techniques. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as Tables, frequencies counts, and percentages. Findings of the study revealed that the government has provided incentives that have helped to encourage adult learners to embark on adult literacy programme, government provides facilities and educational aids for adult literacy programmes, there is standard feedback between the government and adult literacy operators, government carries out training for adult instructors and government has provided incentives that have helped to encourage adult learners to embark on adult literacy programme. It was further revealed that government set standard for instructor learners’ ratio, government facilitates adults’ education by encouraging private efforts in the establishments of literacy centres. It was recommended that the operators (Government) should ensure that the payment of the instructors and facilitators salaries and the release of their entitlement as at when due. It was further recommended that the government should try and contribute to the adult literacy programme for effective running of the programme and for proper delivery of instructions.
