ABSTRACT

This study assesses the retraining needs of contemporary Adult Educators in Benin Metropolis. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design. The sample consisted of 74 adult educators from three Local Government Area of Edo State namely Egor, Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha respectfully. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 74 (Seventy four) respondents which were basically adult educators. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher himself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that the categories of Adult Educators found in Benin Metropolis are professional educators, trainers and facilitator, adult basic education instructors and community educators. It was also revealed that there are challenges faced by adult educators in their quest to meeting their retraining needs in Benin Metropolis which includes limited funding, technological barriers, inadequate institutional support and also sufficiently trained adult educators. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Government should release the adequate funds audio-software such as radio-tapes, cassettes and record CDs for listening and oral activities in the adult education programme to make the instructional materials appropriate.
