ASSESSMENT OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT ON FAMILY CAREGIVERS

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the psychological and economic impact on family caregivers of children with sickle cell anaemia at sickle cell centre, Benin City. This study was a cross-sectional research design and was conducted among a target population of 130 health caregivers located in Oka Oredo in Benin City. The accidental sampling technique was used, an adapted questionnaire was used to get data from the respondents, which was validated by the researcher's supervisor. Results of the study showed that sickle cell anaemia had 78(60%) moderate impact, 45(35%) high impact and 7(5%) poor Psychological impact on the family; 110(84%) high sociological impact, 19(15%) moderate sociological impact and 1(1%) low sociological impact; and that 118(87%) had high economical effect, 10 (8%) had moderate economical effect and 2(5%) had low impact. In view with this study it was recommended for government and healthcare providers to adequately educate caregivers on the burden of caring for a child with sickle cell so as to enable them cope adequately and reduce the impact of its psychosocial and economical effect on them.
