ASSESSMENT OF THE PROGRAMME AND IMPLEMENTATION OF STUDENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

This research project was carried out to assess the programme and the implementation of students entrepreneurship programme in University of Benin. This project appraises the nature and mode by which entrepreneurship education is being implemented in the university. The study was conducted using the survey research design and the population of the study comprises of 400 level vocational and technical education students of 2023/2024 Academic session. A sample size of 107 students was used for the study out of the population 217, this was obtained by using all the course areas in 400 level in the department and sample size consists of one hundred and eight (108) business education students, fifty seven (57) Home economics students, thirty-three (33) Agric students and nineteen (19) ITE students of vocational and technical education students. 50% was taken from each of these course areas using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection in this study was a structured questionnaire. The instrument comprises of two (2) sections; section A and section B. Section A sought information on the demographic data such as sex and course area while section B was used to collect data for answering the research questions. The section comprises of twenty-four (24) item questions from which six (6) items were raised from each of the research questions where the respondents were required to select the most appropriate option. Responses were rated on four (4) point rating scale respectively. This ranged from strongly agree, agree, strongly disagree and disagree with 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively. This was used to collect information for answering the research questions on respondents’ perception on entrepreneurship education and the implementation of students’ entrepreneurship programme in the university of Benin. The instrument was validated by the researchers’ supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education in the University of Benin and the reliability of the instrument was determined Cronbach alpha method. The instrument was administered to 24 students from the department of vocational and technical education, University of Benin who was part of the study population and the reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.82. The instrument was validated by 3 experts from the department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean and standard deviation. The findings of this study showed that the lecturers have enough knowledge of entrepreneurship education, it also revealed that the size and arrangement of lecture-theatre can affect the learning process of the students. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Nigerian government should provide adequate funding for education in line with the recommended UNESCO 26% of GDP so that institutions of higher learning can be able to create enabling environment for entrepreneurship education and training of students. More attention should also be given to entrepreneurship education in the university.
