ABSTRACT
This study is a survey work that assess the nature of biology laboratory in public senior secondary schools in Oredo LGA. Three research questions was formulated and examined in the course of the study. It sought to find out the laboratory apparatus available in the biology laboratory, how often the biology laboratory is used by student and teachers and the capacity of the biology laboratory as compared to the number of biology students in public senior secondary schools in Oredo LGA. Survey research design was employed for the study, the population of public senior secondary schools which is 14 were used for this study and a sample size of 5 public senior secondary schools were used which was selected with the aid of simple random sampling techniques. The Instrument for data collection was the use of checklist which was of 3 sections, section A, B and C. Data were collected through personal visit to different schools across Oredo LGA, Edo state. The data gotten were analyzed using simple percentage. It was revealed from the study that laboratory apparatus are moderately available in the biology laboratory in public senior secondary schools in Oredo LGA. It was also revealed that teachers and students seldomly use the laboratory to carry out research on what have been taught in class and also that the capacity of biology laboratory in public senior secondary schools in Oredo LGA is mostly adequate to accommodate the number of biology students. Based on the findings, it was recommended by the researcher that school administrators should ensure that time allocated in the school time table for practical classes in biology is fully utilized by teachers and students, teacher should be oriented on the importance of engaging all students in carrying out biology experiment, government and it's agencies should provide more biology laboratory apparatus, equipment, specimens e.t.c and also school laboratory should be built for those schools that don't have laboratories.
