ABSTRACT

The concept of contraception is an important aspect of sexual and reproductive health of individuals as it exposes individuals and family to be more aware and informed about different contraceptive options and encourage individuals to make healthy choices in planning a family or in having a healthy sexual life and equip young ones with adequate health information to make informed choices. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide this study. Important and pertinent literature related to the study were reviewed. The aim of this study therefore, is to assess the level of knowledge associated with persistent use of oral contraceptives among students of University of Benin, Benin city, Edo State. The research design is a descriptive type of Survey design and the study population consisted of a total population of 47,468 students of University of Benin. A sample size of 100 students were selected using a random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a well-designed structured questionnaire which was validated by the project Supervisor and two other lecturers from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental education. Collated data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as frequency and percentage tables. The findings from the study revealed that majority of the respondents had a high knowledge of the concept of contraception and the dangers associated with persistent use of contraceptives. The study also showed that majority of the respondents had a negative attitude towards the use of oral contraceptives, as societal and religious beliefs, potential side effects among other factors made them skeptical about the use of contraceptives. It is therefore recommended that educational materials and books should contain and emphasize benefits as well as risk effects of oral contraceptives to maintain and improve the already established knowledge of contraceptives. It is also recommended that regular awareness campaigns, interactive workshops and seminars should be organized in schools and communities to promote and encourage positive attitude of young adults towards contraceptives use hence providing a conducive environment for the utilization of contraceptives.
