ABSTRACT

Seven (07) soil samples were obtained and analyzed for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, zinc, chromium, nickel, iron and copper) using an AAS machine with the aim of assessing the level of pollution and distribution in soils around Iwofe Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The ranges from the result of the analysis of cadmium, zinc, nickel, iron and copper are 0.05 - 5.94, 0.26 - 1.10, 0.74 - 2.23, 15.17 - 129.56 and 0 - 5.09, respectively. High cadmium concentrations were observed in samples IWF 3 and IWF 5 which had values of 1.10 mg/kg and 5.94 mg/kg, respectively. The high cadmium concentration in IWF 3 is probably due to its proximity to an oil terminal, while for IWF 5, it could be attributed to its closeness to an abandoned cement factory in the area. The results in the study indicates pollution of cadmium as its mean value is higher than the target values set by WHO. The following pattern of heavy metal distribution was found in this study: iron > cadmium > nickel > copper > zinc. Further detailed trace element analysis should be carried out in the area.
