ABSTRACT

This study assessed the level of compliance to road traffic signs among road users (motorists and pedestrians) in Benin City. The specific objectives include: to examine the level of awareness of road users to road traffic signs, evaluate the relationship between knowledge of road users and compliance to traffic signs, and to examine the impact of socio-demographic attributes of road users on the level of compliance to road traffic signs in the study area. The study adopted the survey research method in selecting 200 pedestrians and 200 motorists (100 motorists each for public and private) as sample for the study. Data were collected mainly through the use of questionnaire and field observation. The data collected were analysed with both descriptive and inferential statistics including cross-tabulation, frequency tables and simple percentage, while chisquare and binary logistic regression were used to test the stated hypotheses. The result showed that private motorists were more knowledgeable with road traffic signs in the study area than public motorists. We also found that public motorists had better knowledge of road traffic signs than pedestrians. The chi-square test for both the pedestrians and public motorists revealed that there was a significant association between knowledge and level of compliance to road traffic signs with the p-values for both less than the adopted alpha value of 0.05, while that of private motorists returned a non-significant value where the p-value was higher than the adopted alpha level of 0.05. Also, the result of the binary logistic regression indicated that the selected indicators for the model could adequately explain the changes in the level of compliance to road traffic signs. The study showed that knowledge of road traffic signs and consequent compliance in the study area was still very poor. Therefore, it is recommended that, effective policy should be put in place to ensure that people (especially the would-be drivers) adhered to FRSC regulation of going through road traffic and driving training before taking up driving. We also recommend that, the FRSC should geared effort in sponsoring enlightenment campaigns and seminars on different social media platforms to a wider audience on training concerning road signs. It is also recommended that government should put in place modalities to regularly and monitor the level of compliance to road traffic signs by all categories of road users and that government should be strict at motorists (public or private) who drive without driver’s license.
