ABSTRACT

The study examined the assessment of the knowledge and level of awareness of global warming among university of Benin students in Benin. The study was a descriptive research which adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was estimated to be 75,000. The sampling techniques used was simple random sampling techniques used was simple random sampling techniques to select a sample size of 500 respondents for the study. The questionnaire were validated by two experts and environmental education. Reliability of the instrument was determined using the inter-rater/scorer method of reliability testing.

The findings revealed that the level of knowledge and awareness among students in University of Benin are aware that global warming is majorly as a result of human activities and the method used in creating awareness were not adequate . From the findings of the researcher, it was revealed that Deforestation contributes to global warming when trees are cut down and burned or allowed to rot, their stored carbon is released into the air as carbon dioxide. And this is how deforestation and forest degradation contribute to global warming.

The researcher highly recommend sufficient enlightenment and education of the general populace on the phenomenon of global warming and various human activities that warrant it, as well as the impacts on human health, the environment and on the future of the earth are essential . These can be achieved through the engagement of relevant stakeholder such as the relevant sector/agents of government health educators, media houses, policy markers, academic institutions in information dissemination on the dos and don’ts, down to the grassroot level.
