ABSTRACT
Societies generally have always had interest in the ways and manner in which their young ones are prepared for becoming good citizens and how they learn to take part in social as well as political life. It is in line with these, that the Nigeria government introduced Social studies into the school curriculum. It was envisioned that the subject will lay a strong foundation for effective citizenship education. The origin of the teaching of Social studies in schools was in form of three traditional subjects such as Geography, Religious Knowledge and Economics. These subjects taught gave little consideration to learners. The minds of the young learners need to be exposed to critical thinking and problem solving strategies in a fast changing world. In striving to achieve these goals, Social Studies curriculum employs an integrated approach that takes cognizance of all aspects of life.
