ABSTRACT
The study assessed the implementation of adult education programmes in Ovia North East local government area of Edo State using Pioneer Education Centre, Oluku, Benin City, Edo State, as a case study. The main objective of this study was to investigate the implementation of adult education programmes from which some specific objectives were raised to guide the study; to identify the adult education programmes established, to assess the resources provided for the implementation of the adult education programmes, to examine the extent that adult education programmes are implemented, to evaluate the relationship between implementation of adults and to find out the challenges to the implementation of adult education programmes. The design adopted for this study was a descriptive survey research design and thus the data for the study were collected with the use of questionnaire. A total sample size of 120 participants were used as a sample for this study. After expert’s validation of the instrument, it was administered for reliability. The reliability coefficient was determined using the Cronbach alpha procedure and it came up to 0.70 which indicated a high degree of stability of the instrument. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to guide the study. The major findings of this study include the fact that adult education programmes established in the said local government area that there is no provision of funds to cater for the programmes as well as inadequate trained personnels to facilitate adult learners. The study however concludes that adult education programmes has significantly boost the adult learner’s participation in social, civic and economic development of their communities using their improved knowledge, skills and aptitude. It was however recommended that the government should establish more adult education centres, make it closer and accessible to the people, include more lucrative programmes in the curriculum content, provide adequate infrastructure for conducive atmosphere of learning as well as fund the programmes and train and release more experienced facilitators for the programme.
