ABSTRACT

This study was designed to assess the impact of rural road infrastructure on agricultural production and marketing in Ughelli North L.G.A. of Delta State. Purposive sampling was used to select seven communities. Questionnaires were used to collect data from the respondents in the study area. Data collected for this study was based on primary and secondary sources. Descriptive statistic techniques such as percentage, frequencies, mean and chi-square was used to highlight the socio-economic status of the respondents in the study area. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the analysis of the data collected.

The research established that 13.5% of the road network in the study area are properly engineered and are in good condition. The average distance from farms to the various communities to the market was approximately 51.50% out of which 48.50% do not have access to their farms from the road. Most of the roads connecting the various communities or the market where the produce are sold are in bad condition. Farming in the district is characterised by small scale farming and the farmers own small portions of farm and they engage in rudimentary techniques for farming. This is the major reason for the poor annual income returns to the farmers. It was also revealed that the type of road connecting the communities to the market has a significant relationship with where farmers sell their farm produce and the choice of crops they grow.

The study recommends the development and rehabilitation of road infrastructure in Ughelli North L.G.A, to improve the agricultural potentials of the framers in the study area, thereby increasing their income and general well-being.
