ABSTRACT

The construction sector is a major source of physical infrastructure necessary for human survival and development. For a very long time, Lagos state have been experiencing building failure.

This project examines the factors that lead to building failure in a developing economy using Lagos State as case study. The method of selective random technique was used in this study. Engineers, architects, builders, clients and other professionals in the building industry. Questionnaires were used to gather information from the sample population.

Factors that lead were properly investigated and ranked on a 5-point scale. The work showed that leading factors that lead to building failure are poor workmanship(0.785), faulty foundation(0.76),faulty construction methodology(0.758) .The factors that ranked least are deviation from approved plan(0.59), use of incompetent contractors(0.593) and defective design (0.6175).

Information provided by this project will serve as direction to Structural Engineers as well as construction firms on what practices to adopt and what to avoid in order to build a safe and durable structure.
