ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the descriptive analysis on the identified factors responsible for drug abuse among Health, Safety and Environmental Education Undergraduate Students.
To carry out this research, the researcher formulated three research questions. The researcher randomly selected respondents from all levels; 100 – 400 in the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education in the University of Benin, totaling One Hundred and Thirty Six (136) respondents. Data was collected through a test instrument (questionnaire), analysis and findings were made.
The result of the research shows that the factors identified by the students as responsible for drug abuse were; peer group or social influence, curiosity, experimentation, better academic performance.
Alarmingly, the research also revealed that the mostly abused drug among students is Marijuana.
Therefore, this research work recommend Awareness campaign should be carried out in school against drug abuse thereby stating the effects and complications to one’s health. Adequate health information should be given to students on the proper usage of drugs; this can be carried out through health talks, health seminars, handbills and postals. Also, students with academic fears, personal/family problem or anxiety should meet with the school counselor for advice and social support. Finally, Parents and guardians should take more interest in their children or wards.
