Abstract
The study examined the challenges of teaching Social Studies under the Universal Basic Education in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. A descriptive research design which involves collection of data through the use of questionnaire was adopted to solicit information. The population of the study consists of all teachers and school administrators in public junior and private secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for this study consists of sixty (60) teachers. Four research questions were used to guide the study using frequency count and percentages to analyze the data collected the reliability stood at 0.92. The findings revealed that Social factors such as high rate of school dropout; parental poor socio-economic status poses challenge to UBE programme, inadequate housing scheme for teachers; poor environmental ventilation in class rooms etc. is a challenge to UBE programme and late and non-payment of teachers’ salaries and benefit, unqualified teacher, poor teachers’ experience, ineffective school administration, rejection of posting to rural areas is a challenge to UBE programme. It was recommended that government should increase budget allocation to education. This is assumed to improve payment of teacher’s salaries. Also as an encouragement any teacher that is entitled for training should allowed to.Also government should employ religious and traditional rulers to educate and encourage populace on the importance of schooling to the society. Also, the use of mass media through drama programmes could be a good channel educating people.
