ASSESSMENT OF THE CHALLENGES AND PROSPECT OF ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM IN THE EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

            The study assessed of the challenges and prospects of adult literacy programmes in Egor Local government area of Edo State. In order to achieve the objectives, four research questions were raised to guide the study.

            The survey research design of the descriptive technique was adopted for the study. The population of the study include all the stakeholders in Adult Education practice including lecturers in the University of Benin and literacy facilitators in Egor. 72 participants were the sample size that was used in the study. They were selected through a census sampling technique. The instrument used in the study was questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the supervisor and other experts in the department of Adult and Non-Formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. To ensure the reliability of the instrument the researcher adopted the Cronbach's alpha procedure and it produced a Cronbach’s alpha co-efficient of 0.70 as the reliability index of the instrument. The instrument was personally administered by the researcher to the respondents while the collected data were analyzed using frequency count and percentages, mean and standard deviation. A criterion mean of 2.50 was used for decision making.

            It was found in the study that there are various forms of literacy programmes available to adult learners in Egor Local government Area of Edo State such as the traditional classroom-based literacy programmes, community-based literacy among others. It was also revealed that the major socio-economic challenges facing Adult Learners in Egor local government area of Edo State are  financial constraints, learners’ inability to balance work and that the challenges to the effective delivery of adult literacy programme in Egor Local Government Area are limited funding, inadequate qualified instructors, low literacy levels and bureaucratic red tape. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that there are high prospects for those who undergo Adult education programmes in Egor local government area of Edo. The study recommended among others that adult education programmes should be adequately funded in Egor local government area of Edo State; more literacy centres should be established especially in the rural areas of Egor local government areas by the state and local government in order to allow more participants in the programme and that adequate counselling services should be provided to adult learners in order to help them on how to balance work and study obligations together,
