ABSTRACT

The assessment of the availability and utilization of instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of adults in adult literacy programme in Benin metropolis is a crucial topic that deserves attention. This study seeks to investigate the availability and utilization of teaching materials to enhance the teaching and learning experience of adults in Benin Metropolis. The study will examine the variety of instructional resources available, their sufficiency, and how they are utilized by facilitators in adult literacy programme. Furthermore, it will delve into the obstacles encountered in obtaining and using these materials, along with the strategies implemented to overcome these challenges. The outcomes of this study will offer valuable insights into the current status of instructional materials in adult literacy centers, guiding policymakers and stakeholders in implementing necessary measures to enhance the quality of adult Literacy programme in Benin Metropolis. To guide this study, four research question were raised.The study employed survey research design for data collection using purposive sampling technique to select a sample size of one hundred and five ( 105 ) respondents. A survey was conducted to gather data on the availability and utilization of instructional materials from adult learners and facilitators in adult literacy centers using structured questionnaires title 'Assessment of availability and utilization of instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of adult in adult Literacy programme in Benin metropolis'. The instrument was validated by the researchers supervisor and other lecturers in the department and the reliability of the instrument was determined using test re-test method. The data were analyzed using frequency, simple percentage and table. xi Key findings of this study revealed that chalkboard, posters, radio, tape recorders, chart, textbooks, bulletin, flashcard as well as real objects are available in adult Literacy centres and they are commonly utilized during the teaching and learning process. However, electronic materials such as overhead projector, slide, television as well as computer are grossly lacking in adult Literacy centre as a result of lack of power supply, lack of technical know how by some facilitators. It was recommended that government and stakeholders of adult Literacy providers should provide funds and all the necessary materials needed for an effective teaching and learning of adult in adult literacy programme as well as organizing seminar and workshop for these facilitators inorder to update and upgrade their skills and knowledge on how to handle modern instructional technology in adult literacy centres.
