ABSTRACT
A polyherbal formulation of four medicinal plants known for their aphrodisiac properties was explored in the current study. Therefore this study evaluates the aphrodisiac properties of a polyherbal formulation in male Wistar rats. The formulation consists of four medicinal herbs: Garcinia kola, Zingiber officinale, Musa paradisiaca and Cymbopogon citratus. The study was conducted using adult male Wistar rats, which were divided into four groups: a negative control group treated with distilled water (1.5 ml), a positive control group treated with sildenafil citrate (100 mg/kg), and three experimental groups treated with the aqueous polyherbal extract with three different doses (50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg). The rats were acutely (one day) administered the extract, and their sexual behaviour was evaluated using different parameters such as mounting frequency, intromission frequency and ejaculation frequency. The testosterone concentrations were also determined using standard procedure. The results of the sexual behaviour study demonstrate that the polyherbal extract significantly increased mounting and intromission frequency in a dose-dependent manner. The polyherbal extract also elongated the ejaculation frequency. The testosterone concentration had a slightly significant increase.in the four groups. The highest dose of 200 mg/kg showed the best aphrodisiac potential. The present study provides evidence for the potential aphrodisiac properties of the polyherbal formulation, which could be further investigated for its clinical applications in treating male sexual dysfunction.
