ABSTRACT

The study investigated teachers’ use of behavioral modification techniques in classroom in Ikpoba Okha Local Government area of Edo state. In order to carry out the study, three research questions were raised and answered. The study adopted descriptive survey research design.The population of the study comprised of eight hundred and eighteen(818) primary school teachers in Ikpoba Okha local government area in Edo state. The sample consist of one hundred (100)primary teachers selected through purposive sampling technique. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire designed after review of related literature. The instrument was validated by three lecturers in the Institute of Education. The reliability of the instrument was established using the test re-test method which yield a value of 0.70. The data generated was analyzed using frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that teachers perceive the use of behavioral modification techniques as an effective strategy for managing classroom behavior. This study is employed by teachers as positive reinforcement changes students behaviors positively. The study concluded that behavioral modification is a psychotherapeutic intervention used to eliminate or reduce maladaptive behavior in children or adult. Based on this, it was recommended that there is need for the state government to support teachers to acquire appropriate behavioral modification technique that will motivate children to learn.
