ABSTRACT

This study examined secondary schools Biology Teachers’ Awareness and the use of Modern and Scientific Tools for the teaching of biology in senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state, Nigeria. Thirty (30) randomly selected biology teachers from five (5) selected secondary school made up the sample of study. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire and five (5) research questions were raised for the study. Data was analyzed using Simple frequencies and percentage.

The result revealed that a little above average percentage of the biology teachers are aware of the modern and scientific tools available in Schools in Egor LGA but certain factors such as lack of adequate and functional modern and scientific tools, time constraints in classroom and large class size influenced most of the biology teachers inability to utilize these tools. Also few of the biology teachers lacked the skills to handle the modern and scientific tools as well as there was lack of access to virtual laboratory in some schools especially the public Schools.

This study recommends that the Government should provide sufficient modern and scientific tools, adequate in form and quality to schools in the LGA for effective teaching of biology. And also large class size should be avoided, allocating enough time to biology teaching in classroom Also regardless of the gender and school type, teachers should be trained on the possible skills needed to handle these modern and scientific tools or better still be encouraged to improve on themselves by way of attending seminars and in-school trainings on the use of these modern and scientific tools.
