Abstract

This study was carried out to assess stroke risk factors and preventive measures among elderly out-patients with hypertension in a selected tertiary healthcare institution in Edo state with 3 research objectives and research questions. The study adopted the survey research design, and convenient sampling method was used to select two hundred and five (205) elderly outpatients with hypertension receiving healthcare in University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin city, Edo state. A well-structured questionnaire was used as instrument of data collection. Analysis and interpretation of data were also discussed, using tables with percentage and means to represent the information. The result from the study revealed that the respondents have better knowledge of stroke warning signs compared to risk factors and preventive measures. While they may be able to recognize symptoms, there seems to be a gap in their understanding of what causes and prevents a stroke. Furthermore, poor commitment to lifestyle changes (29.8%) and self-control (29.3%) are common barriers, implying the need for behavior support programs to encourage consistent health practices. Busy schedules and financial constraints affect adherence, with 26.8% citing time limitations "Always," and 30.2% indicating "Sometimes" they face financial challenges. This highlights socioeconomic factors that impact preventive behavior. It therefore recommends enhancing education on both risk factors and preventive measures could improve comprehensive knowledge among this group. Also, improving education on both risk factors and preventive measures could enhance overall knowledge in this group.
