ASSESSMENT OF SPORT FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT AS TOOLS TO FACILITATE SPORT PARTICIPATION AMONG STUDENTS: A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was designed to investigate the importance of assessment of sport facilities and equipment as tools to facilitate sport participation amongst students in university of Benin. Four research questions were raised which are outlined thus: to what extent does the assessment of sport facilities and equipment effects student’s participation in sport? What are the problems posed by poor management and maintenance of sport facilities and equipment? What are the proper measure a sport administrator would ensure to adopt in the management and maintenance of facilities and equipment in school sports? To what extent does sport facilities and equipment facilitate participation in sports?

The research design used for this study was descriptive survey research design. Random sampling techniques was used from these four research questions twenty questions were raised in the questionnaires together with the data for this study and the questionnaires was subjected to persons product moment correlation coefficient formula. A correlation coefficient of 0.76 was obtained. The population of this study consists of 200 persons which includes students and staffs of university of Benin.

The finding from the study include sport facilities and equipment are tools that enhance students participation to a very large extend, as their roles cannot be over emphasized participating in sport is mainly affected by the availability of sport facilities and equipment. Also finding from this study show that the extent to which student participate in sporting activities depend on the sport facilities and equipment available. Study also shows that University of Benin allow student gain access to facilities and equipment but don’t allow student gain access to new modern facilities and equipment, or are not expose to modern facilities as the modern facilities are just store or lock up in one room where nobody is using. It was therefore recommended that sport administrators should provide adequate and functional sporting facilities and equipment in order to encourage students participation in sports.
