ABSTRACT

In the present study, there was significant increase (p<0.05) in the FBS, serum ferritin, erythropoietin, WBC indices, platelet indices and RBCs indices of the subjects when compared with control group as well as across age group and sex. Based on the research outcomes of this study, the significant changes observed in serum ferritin, erythropoietin and some haematological parameters among geriatric diabetes subject has been implicated to cause and put patients at risk of developing anaemia. It is therefore an important observation that the development of anaemia in diabetes may predict many possible abnormalities and health complications. Furthermore, understanding the mechanism by which this occurs may provide the opportunity to develop therapeutic options that may improve patient outcome and curb the Public Health threat of increasing incidence of co-morbidity especially in our remote communities where socio-economic disparity is pronounced. The findings in the present study have implications for diabetic patients in general and geriatrics in particular, thus we strongly suggest the need for routine full blood counts option in the diagnosis and management of type 2 diabetes to prevent anaemia by regulating the levels of erythropoietin and ferritin in the patients.
