ABSTRACT

The management of Solid waste is by no means am easy task. It requires improved technology and skills. Effective and efficient solid waste management is capital intensive but yet an essential practice which every society ought to abide by in order to maintain a healthy living standard in an economic friendly manner.

Locally available tools and equipment within the reach of the Oka market participants were deployed towards finding the best way of managing the solid wastes which are being generated in the market. Much sophisticated tools were not deployed since they are not sustainable economically by the traders in the market. The questionnaire used for the purpose of entertaining oral response from both the buyers and sellers within the market environment was prepared in line with an approved international standard of best practices. Precautionary measures were ensured wherever necessary to ensure accuracy in the expected results.

The results obtained from this study have shown that the number of female traders in the market is higher than their male counterpart. The results also showed that clothing or jewelry and other unclassified wastes are most commonly generated waste materials in the market. The results equally reviewed that many of the traders are aware of solid wastes and their effects on their environments. Solid Wastes generation in the market is a routine act with its peak occurring during the festive periods. Many of the traders in the market however use different sizes of containers to gather their solid wastes from which they dispose them off periodically. The solid waste collection and disposal by the waste management in charge of the market is periodically and they do not recycle the wastes due to the unavailability of the required technology and skilled personal.
