Samples were purchased from local markets and analyzed for the content of Sodium benzoate and sugar using UV - Vis spectroscopy. Samples were chosen to cover the popular and easily available drinks. The samples collected include Fearless Energy Drink, Smirnoff Drink, H2O Drink and Schweppes Drink.
The results obtained a Sugar range of 113.2ppm ± 3.5355ppm to 1473.2ppm ± 12.0208ppm with Fearless drink giving the highest concentration with a value of 1473.2ppm ± 12.0208ppm and H2O drink giving the least concentration with a value of 113.2ppm ± 3.5355ppm. Comparison of the values with the Standard Organization of Nigeria and World health organization regulatory limits range of between 7000ppm (7g/100ml) to 14000ppm (14g/100ml) revealed them to be within the limits.
The results obtained a Sodium benzoate range of 239.4ppm ± 14.1421ppm to 689.4ppm ± 56.5685ppm with Smirnoff drink giving the highest concentration with a value of 689.4ppm ± 56.5685ppm and H2O drink giving the least concentration with a value of 239.4ppm ± 14.1421ppm. Comparison of the values with the accepted limits stipulated by the international standard of the United States of America which is 0.1% revealed them to be within the limits.
Based on the findings from the analysis, the drinks were deemed to be safe for consumption.
