ABSTRACT
The study assessed the relevance of SIWES to business education programmes in in colleges of education in Delta State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and one null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance for the study. The population of the study was 196 year III secretarial students from three colleges of education in Delta. There was no sampling as the entire population was used for the study. The survey research design was used for this study. The instrument used was validated by three experts. Test retest method was used for the reliability and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to compute reliability of the instrument which yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.75.Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The t-test was used to test the hypothesis. From the results of the analysis, it was discovered that the relevance of SIWES to business education programme in colleges of education in Delta State are proper placement of students in places relevant to their studies, adequate motivation of students during the course of their training, practical experience exposure, adequate administrative experience during their training and adequate supervision by both institution and industry based supervisors. Students did not differ significantly in their rating on the relevance of SIWES to business education programme in colleges of education in Delta State with respect to gender (male & female). Consequently, it was recommended that Students should choose IT placement related to their course of study so as to benefit maximally from the scheme. Institutions should improve on their supervision of students participating in SIWES so as to monitor their progress. Furthermore, students should be motivated through consistent allowances from ITF in order to participate fully in the scheme. Finally, recommendations were made for further studies such as influence of SIWES on students’ academic performance.
