ASSESSMENT OF PROGRAMMING SKILLS POSSESSED BY COMPUTER EDUCATION STUDENT TEACHERS FOR TEACHING COMPUTER SCIENCE

ABSTRACT

The study was carried on the assessment of programming skills possessed by computer education student teachers for teaching computer science. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study comprised of One hundred and eight (108) pen ultimate and final year Computer Education students in University of Benin while the sample for the study comprised of sixty (60) students (20 pen ultimate and 40 final year Computer Education students) randomly selected from the population. A structured questionnaires titled: Assessment Of Programming Skills Possessed By Computer Education Student Teachers For Teaching Computer Science was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor as well as two other experts in the Faculty of Education. The Split half reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument which yielded a co-efficient index of .401 and .787. Data were analyzed with mean and standard deviation.

The study concluded that students are aware of internet services, have access to the internet and use the internet. Also, they access the internet using Wi-Fi, hotspot and phone. The study also shows that students make use of the internet for educational, communication, commercial, and recreational. Lack of device, unstable Power supply, high subscription price, are challenges that is encountered in the use of internet. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made for the study: The study recommends that alternative power supply should be made available, subscription price should be made affordable for every student to mention a few.
