ABSTRACT
Insecurity in Nigeria poses a huge challenge. The major forms of insecurity are traceable to resource conflicts, environmental conflicts, and religious conflicts, with cyber security contributing to the challenges. It has been opined that armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes are thriving in Nigeria due to ineffective police intervention.
The Nigeria Police, by the stipulations of statutory and constitutional provisions, has the responsibility of managing insecurity in Nigeria, specifically, in the prevention and detection of crimes; protection of the rights and freedom of every person in Nigeria as provided in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(as amended), the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights and any other law. To this end, the police are charged with maintaining public safety, law and order; and the protection of the lives and properties of all persons in Nigeria, amongst others.
The research aims to assess insecurity management in Nigeria, and the efficiency of the police in addressing the challenges. This project suggests among other things, a whole-government and whole-of-society approach in the management of insecurity challenges in Nigeria. Essentially, the crux of this work is to de-emphasize, " the police only" approach and adopt a synergy of society, the police, enhanced government policies, and other sister agencies to be enlisted in the war against insecurity in Nigeria. Extensively, policy formulations, emulating the concept of state police, as obtainable in the United States of America, and other climes, amongst other solutions to the insecurity quagmire are recommended.
