ABSTRACT

This study assessed the level of inhalable air particulate matter (PM10) around different quarry environment and communities in Iyuku, Ikpeshi Edo State. Inhalable particulate matter were assessed by an active method using a portable hand-held air quality monitor (L529K). The sampling were carried out in two different season and all were triplicated. The obtained data were subjected to statistics, analysis. Inhalable particulate matter level in all the studied locations were found to be higher than the 50 μg/m3 standard set by world health organization for the pollutant. The seasonal ranges of the obtained inhalable particulate matter obtained were 93.20 – 225.20 μg/m3 and 118.40 – 390.20 μg/m3 for wet and dry season respectively. Also the mean concentration based on the quarried rock type were 183.40 μg/m3 and 257.15 μg/m3 for hard and soft rock quarry environment respectively. Likewise their was also significant difference in the spatial distribution of the studied pollutant since the obtained p-value of 0.0032 is less than the alpha value. Particulate were discovered to be much around the soft rock quarried environment compared to the hard rock quarried environment.
