ABSTRACT
Nursing as an art and science, inorder to achieve desired patient health outcomes by ensuring the use of individualised and interpersonal intervention strategies. The current nursing staff shortage has an imminent effect on the kind of care nursing seeks for achieve for her patients This study was conducted on assessment of the effect of nursing staff shortage on quality nursing care of patients in university of benin teaching hospital, benin city. This research work aims to assess the quality of patient care among nurses, to assess nurse - patient ratio in University of Benin Teaching Hospital, to identify factors Influencing quality nursing care of patients among nurses. The study employed a descriptive Research design, which refers to a systematic process of observing and describing what a subject does without influencing them. Census sampling technique was used. A well structured questionnaire was administered to 202 nurses in selected wards, as Identified in the scope of study. The study revealed that 76.80% of the respondents think think their unit is experiencing nursing shortage. Majority, 47.90% reported the nurse-patient ratio in their unit/ward operate 1:06. Also, 87.40% reported nursing shortage have a negative effect on nurses and 84.70% reported that nursing shortage has a negative effect on patients. The majority, 47.90% reported causes of nursing shortage was increased demand of care. The study therefore recommends that Government and ministry of health should make concerted efforts to ensure that nurses have a conducive staffing system to practice, in order to limit the negative effect nursing staff shortage has on patients care, amongst others.
