CONCLUSION

Despite the presence of a lot of organizations (local, regional and international) there are still a high percentage of children with chronic malnutrition which means the strategy being used in nutritional intervention has to be reviewed. Respondents in the age group 40-50months had the highest level of underweight which may be attributed to little or no supervision of these children at this age. They tend to start fending for themselves at this age and this may affect their weights.

Carbohydrates and plant proteins were the major classes of food distributed in the camp although planting of vegetables is encouraged through provision of seedlings to the IDPs, the climate of the camp doesn’t encourage the best output for their cultivation and this restrict the IDPs to the two (carbohydrate and plant protein) classes of food. The effect of this was shown by the high percentage of malnutrition among the respondents.

A high percentage of the caregivers did exclusive breastfeeding but it seems it’s just a ‘band wagon’ practice because almost the same percentage of the caregivers didn’t understand what knowledge of nutritional status was. Giving water to babies before breastmilk flow was also a common practice among caregivers which still proved that the knowledge of nutritional status was not present.
