ABSTRACT
Lead is a heavy metal that is toxic and a bio-accumulate in the environment. In addition many of these heavy metals are generally non-essential to plants and man. Lead is a toxic metal and is an abiotic stress factors that affect plants morphologically and changes the chemical status of plants The toxicity of metals in plants has several effects which are replacement of essential ions and inhibition of photosynthesis leaf epinasty, chlorosis, inactivation of essential enzymes , oxidative stress , and many more. The most sensitive part of plants to pollution are the leaves . The plant for this research are Telfairia occidentalis, Pterocarpus mildbraedii, Piper guineense, Piper peltatum, Corchorus olitorius, Ocimum gratissimum,Talinue triangulare, Vernonia amygdalina, Gongronema latifolium gotten from three major markets in Benin City,Edo State Nigeria where their local names, common names and uses where stated and lead concentration assessment carried out on each plant show that the lead content for each plant where significantly different from each other and also their mean values. Apparatus used for this research are as follows; Muffle Furnace, 0 – 1000 oC, Oven, 0-200 oC, 50 ml Pyrex Beaker, Crucible , Glass stirring rod, Filter Paper. The reagents used to are Aqua Regia: Measure 75 ml of Conc. HCl and 25 ml conc.
