ASSESSMENT OF ICT SKILLS OF UNIVERSITY OF BENIN BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study assessed the ICT skills of University of Benin business education students for employment in Edo state. In doing this, four research questions were raised to guide the study.  A total of 1029 business education students constitute the population of the study while sample size of one hundred and two (102) respondents were drawn through a simple random technique for the study. A structured questionnaire designed with a modified Likert Scale method made up of a-four-point rating scale was the instrument adopted for the study. The instrument was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other lecturers in the department. The reliability of the instrument was determined using test-retest method and the data analysed using PPMCC to which gave a coefficient of 0.78. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics specifically the frequency count, standard deviation, mean score and simple percentages. The major findings of the study revealed that business education student possess a low extent of computer appreciation skills that are required for employment. Business education students possess a low extent of word processing skills for employment. Business education students possess a low extent of skilful usage of the internet. Business education students possess a low extent of learning data processing skills for employment. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, it was recommended amongst others that business education students should stir up their interest to acquire ICT/ computer appreciation skills to secure gainful employment in the ever changing world of work where every career has a digitalised component, lecturers should ensure that their classes are practical oriented rather than the being theoretical in their lecture delivery.
