ASSESSMENT OF HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BEHAVIOURAL PRACTICES AMONG MEDICAL AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

Background: Lifestyle Behaviours are habits regarding diets and snacking, alcohol consumption, smoking, level of physical activity or sedentary living, weight and stress management. Knowledge and practice of healthy lifestyle behaviours are important in achieving and maintaining good physical, social and mental health and in the prevention of diseases. Improving the healthy lifestyle of individuals will increase life expectancy and significantly reduce the number of non-communicable diseases associated deaths globally. There is paucity of studies on the extent of practice of healthy lifestyle behaviours among medical and health profession students. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the level of practice of healthy lifestyle behaviours among medical and health profession undergraduate students of the University of Benin Method: Proportional sampling techniques was used to assess the total number of students from each department. Individual students from each department were selected via convenience sampling technique. The data for this study was collected using a validated selfadministered questionnaire that tests level of practice of healthy lifestyle behaviour. Students were recruited from the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Basic Medical Sciences in the University of Benin. Descriptive and Inferential statistics of Chi Square was used to analyse the data. Alpha level: 0.05 Result: Findings from this study show that, 273 (95.1%) of the respondents had poor practice of healthy lifestyle behavioural practices. It was observed that there was significant relationship between the age of the respondents and their level of knowledge, older age was reported to be associated with increase in the practice of healthy lifestyle. Other factors such as gender, faculty and department of study were also significantly associated with practice of healthy lifestyle. Conclusion: It can be concluded that study showed that there was poor practice of healthy lifestyle among medical and health professions students of the University of Benin. There was significant association between factors such as age, gender, faculty and department of study on the levels of practice of healthy lifestyle by the participants.
