ABSTRACT
A number of artesian boreholes assessed in the selected communities in Ovia shows a level of geothermal sources. However, very few works have established the heat source that fuels the groundwater. The current study is geared towards ascertaining the Geologic settings using NGSA modified geologic map and aero-magnetic data to generate lineament map in determining the sub-surface structure of the study area as well as the physico-chemical characteristics. A total of 16 water samples in the study area (4 Groundwater artesian, 3 Groundwater, 5 River water, 2 Well water and 2 Spring water) was obtained and was subjected to physico-chemical and elemental analysis to determine the portability of the water and the results are GWA (pH:6.85-7.1, EC:20.7-139.3µS/cm, TDS:9.8-68.4mg/L, Mg:2.64-4.97mg/L, Cu:0.17-0.26mg/L, Pb:0-017mg/L, Fe:0.38-0.62mg/L); GW (pH:6.73-6.92, EC:119.7-142.8 µS/cm, TDS:71.4-85.6 mg/L, Mg:3.26-4.11 mg/L, Cu:0.17-0.28 mg/L, Pb:0-0.009 mg/L); RW (pH:6.89-7.04, EC:22.200-136.700 µS/cm, TDS:10.500-83.400 mg/L, Mg:2.790-5.210 mg/L, Cu:0.220-0.310 mg/L, Pb:0-.008 mg/L, Fe:0.350-0.520 mg/L); WW (pH:6.770-7.280 EC:97.600-125.700 µS/cm TDS:62.600-78.9 mg/L, Mg:2.73-3.87 mg/L, Cu:0.180-0.250 mg/L, Pb:0.005-0.008 mg/L, Fe:0.580-0.690 mg/L) and SW (pH:7.110-7.140, EC:127.300-137.800 µS/cm, TDS:76.900-82.600 mg/L, Mg:2.630-3.620 mg/L, Cu:0.240-0.260 mg/L, Pb:0.008-0.009 mg/L, Fe:0.480-0.520 mg/L, The temperature of the GWA ranges from 32°C - 49°C which is low temperature hydrothermal water which is indicative of a sedimentary geothermal province. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the water is suitable for consumption after comparison with WHO and NSDWQ, more detailed work in the area of geochemistry and mineralogy should be carried out to ascertain a more detailed elemental composition of the rocks in the study area.
