ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of financial literacy programmes on women empowerment opportunities in Egor local government area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics involving frequency count, simple percentage, mean score and standard deviation. The population of the study was made up of participants from four (4) communities in Egor local government namely; Ogida, Uselu, Uwelu and Ekehuan community. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred respondents were randomly selected from the four communities in Egor local government area of do State. The instrument that was used for the data collection is a structured questionnaire titled “Assessment of Financial Literacy Programmes on Women Empowerment Opportunities Questionnaire (AFLPWEOQ)”. The constructed questionnaire for the study was presented to the project supervisor to confirm for face and construct validity. The Cronbanch Alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The questionnaire was administered to a group of 20 respondents which were not part of the study. The result of their responses were correlated and a Cronbach coefficient of .757 was obtained. This shows that the instrument is reliable. The findings from the study include the fact that there is a low level of women empowerment opportunities in Egor local government area of Edo State and that there is low level of financial literacy among women in Egor local government area of Edo State among others. It was concluded that financial literacy programmes have influence on women empowerment opportunities in Egor local government area of Edo State. The study recommended among others that the government and all educational stakeholders should work in collaboration to make financial literacy progammes free for all women so as to enable those who are economically disadvantage to acquire basic financial literacy skills.
