ABSTRACT

This study assessed “Family Life Education as a strategy for promoting Social Security for Women and Girls in Egor local government area of Edo State”. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, five research questions were raised.The research design adopted was the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study include all women and girls and facilitators in the various Literacy centers offering family life education programmes in Egor local government area of Edo state. The sample of the study was made up of 84 participants, drawn through the stratified simple random sampling technique. The research instrument for this study was a self designed questionnaire. It is titled "Family Life education and Social Security Questionnaire"(FLESSQ). The instrument was validated by the project supervisor and other two lecturers in the faculty of education, and the reliability of the instrument was determined, using the cronbach’s alpha procedure, which produced a cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.69. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferetial statistics The study revealed that culture, family welfare, family planning knowlege are the key components of the existing family life education programmes in Egor local goverment area of Edo State, and that women and girls perceived family life education as an advocate for women's rights and responsibilities, it also revealed that limited financial and material resources pose a challenge to the implementation of family life education programmes. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study the researcher recommend that the government and other stakeholders involved in family life education programmes should provide human and material resources needed for its implementation, adequate training for family life educators and adequate implementation of policy guidelines for family life education programmes. Family life educators should be regularly trained and retrained in order to update their knowledge and skills for best practices. Adequate implementation of policy guidelines for family life education programmes.
