The study population of the study consisted of students (6,933) resident in the hostels (hall 1-5). The convenience sampling technique was employed in the study. The sample size of 150 resident students was selected. The research instrument for the study was the questionnaire, which was validated and verified. The descriptive statistics was used in analyzing the data for the study.
From the analysis carried out, the study found that the health habits and practices of university of Benin students are high and positive. The dietary pattern of students in the university is poor. Poor health habits have a negative effect on students’ academic performance. The factors of availability of portable water, recreational activities, level of awareness and appropriate disposal of waste influence the health habits of students. Strategies that can be employed in improving the health habits of students include raising awareness to improve health habits, providing sanitation equipment, employing adequate sanitation staff and availability of adequate toilets/bathrooms. They should be encouraged to maintain the practice and improve on it for better health. Awareness campaign should be given to students on the need to eat balanced meals, wash their hands regularly and eat a lot of vegetables due to the health benefits involved.
