ABSTRACT

 The study was carried out to assess the factors that influences students’ choice of science subjects in Senior Secondary School Students in Oredo Local Government Area. The study was guided by four research questions. Responses were elicited from the respondents using a self-structured questionnaire made up of 23 items.

The Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study and the population of Senior Secondary School Students in Oredo Local Government Area. The sample size of 60 respondents was achieved using the simple random sampling technique. The collection of data was carried out through the administration of structured questionnaire on 60 respondents. The data were analyzed, tabulated, interpreted and then discussed. Percentage and frequency were adopted as a method of data analysis.

The findings of the study therefore clearly revealed that the students perceive that all factors (teacher factors, student factors and family factors) influences students’ choice of science subjects in. Male student, perceived that the teacher factors, student factors and family factors all influence students’ choice of science subjects.Then female students perceive that only teacher factors influence students’ choice of science subject.The different classes have different perceptions SS1 student perceived that the teacher factors and student factor influence students’ choice of science subject. SSII students perceive that all factors (Teachers, students and family). SSIII perceive that the teachers’ factor and student factor influence students’ choice of science subject.In all-boys schools the students perceive that all factor (teacher, student and family) influence students’ choice of science subject in senior secondary school certificate examinations. Following the findings of the study, the researcher recommends below; examining students’ perception of factors which influence their choice of subject in senior secondary school certificate examinations and improving their perception, teachers in senior schools should use more effective teaching methods to present their lessons.
