This research work is titled Assessment of Factors Influencing Students' Choice of Business Education in Public Universities in Edo State.The major aim of this study was to ascertain how different factors influences the choice of students in selecting business education particularly in Edo state public universities. Five research questions guided this study.
The review of literature was conducted under different subheadings in order to understand what had been done in the past on the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted, the population of the study consisted of 829 business education students made up of 409 University of Benin students and 420 Ambrose Ali University students. However, a sample size of 83 students was selected from the population. the questionnaire which was validated and found reliable by experts in business education and my supervisor was used to collect data. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage and frequency count, mean and standard deviation.
The findings of this study revealed that students sees business education as an easy route to enter higher institution, and as a course for aspiring teachers. However, they do likewise see it as a prestigious discipline. It was also revealed in the findings of this study that parents do indeed have enormous influence on the career choice of students. The respondents affirmed that their choice of business education is heavily influenced by the perception of their informed parents on the discipline. Similarly, it was revealed in this study that peer groups influences the career path of students. Results showed that students often favours the advice of their peers when deciding on a career path against the wishes of their parents. In addition, the findings of this study showed that prestige and prospective opportunities are huge influential factors in students' choice of a career. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended among others that education planners should make business education truly vocational; secondary school administrators should make it mandate to organize a career talk and one-on-one counseling session for their outgoing students.
