ABSTRACT
The study Assesses Factors Influencing Academic Performance of Business Studies students’ in junior secondary school in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. An exploratory study of the indices are the theoretical framework, concept of Business Studies, teachers academic qualification and students’ academic performance, physical and instructional facilities, the teacher’s methodology in relation to performance, students’ interest. Five research questions were raised and answered.
The research design that was adopted in this study was the descriptive survey. The population comprised all junior secondary school Business Study teachers in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. The entire population of 109 Business Studies teacher was used for the study and so this figure was taking as the sample size because of the limited number of the population. Hence, there was no need to adopt any sampling technique. The instrument for data collection is a questionnaire, with 4-point Rating Scale, 4 = Very High Extent; 3 = High Extent; 2 = Low Extent; 1=Very Low Extent. The validity, the instrument was given to the researcher’s supervisor and three experts in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Benin. The value of the reliability obtained was 0.84.
The result revealed that the teachers rated to a high extent influence of teachers’ qualification, teaching method, students’ interest and class size on the academic performance of students in business studies in Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State. It was therefore recommendation that Government should create a platform were there teachers should be total participation in the successful implementation of the Business Studies by the communities, politicians and non-political and charitable organizations. Concerned authority should increase the budget to allow the provision of necessary equipment for teaching and learning of business studies for effective academic performance. There should be encouragement of provision of indigenous textbooks and related reading materials for effective teaching and learning of business studies
