ABSTRACT
The construction industry plays a pivotal role in the development of any region, and the selection of building contractors is a critical aspect of successful project execution. This study investigates the multifaceted factors influencing the process of building contractor selection in Edo State, Nigeria. Through a comprehensive literature review, interviews, surveys, and data analysis, this research explores the key determinants shaping the decision-making process of clients, project owners, and stakeholders in selecting building contractors. Three objective of the study were formulated: Evaluate the factors affecting building contractors selection; Assess the influence of building contractors on time, cost and quality performance of project; Compare opinions of consultants and contractors on selection factors of building contractor. The population including those recognized in professionals bodies such as ARCON, COBRON, COREN, NIQS. Due to the number of the sample frame, which is 827, the target sample for the researcher was chosen to be 269 as the sample size because the number is so large. The data collected was then analyzed based on the research objectives. Mean Item Score was used to analyze all the objectives. The factors affecting building contractors selection, respondents in the study classified ten factors as "very important" in contractor selection, including experience, technical expertise, management capability, knowledge of industry policies, and tendered price. In contrast, factors like turnover record and relationship were rated as "average importance."
