ABSTRACT
The study investigated the challenges encountered by English language learners in a multilingual environment, with a specific focus on the undergraduates of University of Benin. The design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey method. Four (4) research questions were raised: What are the main language barriers faced by English language learners as L2 language at the University of Benin? What are the cultural challenges experienced by English language learners in a multilingual classroom at the University of Benin? How do English language learners perceive the support and resources available to them in a multilingual classroom at the University of Benin? What strategies can be implemented to address the challenges faced by English language learners in a multilingual classroom at the University of Benin? The population of this study consisted of all English and Literature undergraduates in the University of Benin 2022/2023 session. A total of two hundred and ten (210) 400 level undergraduates were sampled, 70 each from the departments of DEF, ART and ADT. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents. The research instrument was validated by two lecturers of the Department of Educational foundations. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing frequencies and percentages of responses, including the decision made. Based on the findings, it was discovered that English language learners encounter various obstacles, including language barriers, cultural differences, different learning styles, mother tongue interreference and lots more. Some strategies were recommended to address these challenges faced by English language learners. It was recommended that the school authority should provide targeted language support programs, utilize technology to enhance language learning and offer professional development training for staff and teachers.
