ABSTRACT
Domestic wastewater is produced by necessary daily tasks like washing and bathing, among others. Indiscriminate use of water and poor wastewater management can have significant environmental, public health and socio economic impacts which include environmental degradation, human health risks, water pollution, e.t.c, therefore, maintaining ecosystems, safeguarding human health, and guaranteeing sustainable growth all depend on its efficient management. In this study, data were collected via questionnaires, using cross descriptive survey. Random sampling techniques were used to administer about 242 questionnaires to households in Iba community. The target population of households in iba community was determined using arithmetic and geometric methods. The sample size was then determined by employing Yamane’s formula. The Questionnaires were designed to source for information on the Socio-demographic characteristics of households, Domestic water use and wastewater management and wastewater management practices at households and its challenges. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined using Cronbach’s Alpha statistics. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and the results were presented in tables. The results show that Iba Community uses water for various purposes; bathing, drinking, laundry, toilet flushing, dishwashing, car washing, cooking, income generated and other activities. Bathing was found to be the highest water consuming activity (38678 liters), while drinking was found to be the least (5858 liters). The total amount of wastewater generated in the community is about 183,129 liters. The wastewater management practices were found to be poor due to poor functioning of wastewater management facilities, poor wastewater management habit and insufficient funds which reflect the major challenges faced in the community.
